🛶 Falkirk to Edinburgh 🚤

Back in July 2021, we set off on a barge holiday from Falkirk to Edinburgh — and what an unforgettable adventure it was! From cruising slowly along the Union Canal to drifting past peaceful countryside, it was the kind of trip that forces you to slow down and appreciate the small things.
🛶 Barge Holiday Review – Falkirk to Edinburgh, July 2021 🚤
- Falkirk Wheel:The journey begins with a passage through the Falkirk Wheel, a rotating boat lift that connects the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals.
- Union Canal: The Union Canal is lock-free for the majority of the route, making for a relatively smooth cruise to Edinburgh.
- Linlithgow: A significant point along the way,
- Linlithgow offers attractions like Linlithgow Palace and Linlithgow Loch, as well as opportunities for shopping and dining.
- Edinburgh:The canal journey ends at Edinburgh Quay, a short walk from Princes Street and other city center attractions.
Highlights:
☀️ Glorious summer weather (mostly!)
🚲 Waving to the Cyclists and walkers on the towpath alongside the barge
🌉 Crossing the Avon Aqueduct — absolutely stunning views
🛑 Mooring up in hidden spots for a picnic or a quiet evening
🏙️ Arriving into Edinburgh by water — such a unique way to see the city
It was a real hands-on holiday: opening locks, navigating narrow bridges, and learning to steer around sharp bends.
Surprisingly peaceful, slightly challenging, and definitely one for the bucket list if you like a slow travel experience with a bit of charm.
Would we do it again? In a heartbeat.
